a) Structural adaptation ment to improve access from outside
b) Improve efficiency of the kitchen
Goal: Easier access to main floor and basement with area for coats and shoes
Solution: We added an addition for a backdoor entry that split access to both main floor and basement. The new steps are shallower, wider and deeper.
We took out the old basement steps, filled in the floor and tore down a wall making the kitchen bigger for renovation. Removed 50% of the legacy cabinets making room for better functioning ones.
For the renovation I designed and built:
Nine cabinets, some with internal lighting
Twenty dovetail joint drawers
Island with live edge red cedar countertop
Red cedar side counter
5′ elliptical arch opening to the living room
Rolling barn doors built of reclaimed from wood from the old wall
Two way swinging door to hallway also reclaimed wood
6 leaded glass windows for barn doors and hallway transom
Two floating staircases in the addition

Would you be willing to share where you got your kitchen stools? Your work is beautiful.
Hi Michelle, we found them at Royal Star Furniture in So StPaul.
I changed out the black screws that hold the back on for silver washers and screws. We really like them. Here’s the link:

This remodel by David Tousley and Margaret Brandes is pure artwork. I am a retired remodeling contractor and custom wood worker. The ideas and finish work in the photo gallery are outstanding.. this will be an inspiration to many!
Great job. What a treasure!
