Welcome to this late-80s multilevel home in Eagan. This very active family of four, plus Auggie the dog, loves being the place where friends and family converge. This main-floor complete remodel included removing walls, reconfiguring the kitchen, adding a powder room, and rearranging the laundry. The once-walled-off main floor is now wide open and perfect for entertaining.
Not long after purchasing the house, the homeowners realized the layout wasn’t optimal for them. They and the kids became attached to the neighborhood and the schools, so moving was not considered. Their roots were firmly planted; they just needed the house to serve them better.
The previous layout had angled walls that unnecessarily divided the space and created isolation in each room. The kitchen, while relatively large, was poorly designed and traffic funneled around a tiny, oddly shaped center island. The secondary eat-in kitchen space robbed prime real estate while the formal dining room was closed off and rarely used. The laundry room layout took up more floor space than needed and created a dysfunctional entrance from the attached garage. Further, the split stair design placed bathrooms on upper and lower floors, which could not accommodate wheelchair accessibility for a close family member.
Beyond the daily disconnection, the family matriarch – an event planner by day – thrives on entertaining friends and family. The sectioned-off layout was not conducive to throwing large parties with a few dozen people in one space – and parties are necessary!
Immediately upon entering the front door, the entire main floor is cheerful and welcoming. The open-plan living room invites conversation and laughter, while the kitchen infuses a lively energy. Removing the walls allowed for a complete reconfiguration of the kitchen, with an open galley style kitchen anchored on an enormous granite island. Informal dining was reallocated to the plentiful island, and the dining room has become a regular gathering place. The informal dining area was reclaimed for the kitchen, and a new powder room tucks discreetly into the corner. A simple relocation of the laundry appliances creates a truly multifunctional mud room entrance and replacing the closet with functional cabinetry allows for better storage of grab-and-go outerwear.
This family needed energetic color and fun special touches, wrapped up in timeless design and durable finishes. The teal walls and painted white trim brighten the space like a sunny day. The white upper cabinetry, floating shelves, and white tile backsplash in the kitchen support the airy feeling of openness, while the gray and wood lower cabinets provide grounding structure which anchors the kitchen as a gravitational hub.
The cabinets feature accessories for easier cooking, cleaning, and storage. Pull-out trash bins, spice and oils rack, and pantry racks keep everything in easy reach. Vertical tray storage, hidden storage at the back of the island, and lower cabinets packed with large drawers all were designed around intentional and optimal use of the kitchen.
The large island is topped with leathered granite for interest and a natural texture, which is infinitely durable and stain resistant. The extra deep knee-space at the barstools provides ample space for comfortable lounging and socializing.
Appliances were chosen to enhance the cooking experience, including a freestanding hood fan vented to the exterior. Soft gold accents in the lighting, faucet, and cabinet hardware were curated to add timeless glamour. Other special touches include a decorative wine rack, dry bar, additional window, chandelier and wallpaper in the powder bath, decorative “X” island detail, wide-plank wood-look resilient flooring, black iron stair railings, and window seat reading nook.
This home now feels like an authentic extension of the personalities of the family who lives here. Whether cozying up with a book, working from home or doing homework, entertaining friends, or sitting down for a family meal, the same words continue to echo even six years after the remodel: “This house makes me feel happy.”
